About Dr. Scheinbaum

Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience.  She serves a broad range of individual and corporate clients, specializing in holistic approaches to mental and physical well-being.  Her office is affiliated with the North Suburban Wellness Center in Highland Park, Illinois, and the North Shore Oncology Associates in Skokie, Illinois.  She has been a member of the Medical Staff of Rush North Shore Medical Center (now North Shore University Health Systems-Skokie Hospital) since 1986, providing inpatient consultations in health psychology, with an emphasis on relaxation techniques and positive guided imagery.  She served a two-year term as President of the Women's Board of Rush North Shore and was a member of the Board of Trustees and the Institutional Review Board of Rush North Shore Medical Center.  Dr. Scheinbaum has been a featured speaker for numerous hospital-based community education programs, speaking on a variety of topics ranging from stress reduction to the management of PMS.  In the fall of '08, she presented a workshop on nutrition and cancer to the nursing staff.  She recently joined the Medical Staff of Lake Forest Hospital, now affiliated with Northwestern Hospital.

Dr. Scheinbaum graduated from Fielding Graduate University and Northwestern University.  As a Senior Fellow in Biofeedback from the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, she is a nationally-recognized expert in the field, having presented at national and international conferences, lectured extensively to the general public, taught doctoral-level courses on biofeedback and conducted several research studies, including a controlled study of neurofeedback for ADD and a study of migraine headaches and depression.   Dr. Scheinbaum developed a relaxation tape for children and was commissioned by Biogen to produce a CD for patients with multiple sclerosis to ease the discomfort of self-administered intramuscular injections.  The CD emphasized breathing techniques and hypnotic guided imagery.

As an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit disorders, Dr. Scheinbaum founded the Institute for Attention Deficit Disorders, which introduced neurofeedback training to the Chicago area in the early 1990's.  The local affiliates of ABC News and NBC News aired feature segments about the work of Dr. Scheinbaum and the Institute for ADD.  She was a panel member on a local television talk show about adults with ADD and has been interviewed by several nationally-syndicated radio talk stations about a variety of topics.

The nonpharmacological treatment of anxiety and panic disorders is a special interest of Dr. Scheinbaum.  She has helped hundreds of clients achieve inner quiet and break free from an anxiety-ridden state through a combination of biofeedback-assisted relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavior therapy, and lifestyle changes.  Many of these individuals have been able to withdraw from anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants.

Working with the late Sherry Pfeffer Byer, Ph.D., she brought the Panic/Anxiety/Recovery Center to Northbrook, Illinois in the early 1990;s.  The Center developed group programs for panic reduction, conducted free screening programs for anxiety at Highland Park Hospital as part of the National Anxiety Screening Day, and sponsored community lectures about panic and anxiety.

In addition to obtaining a doctorate in clinical psychology, Dr. Scheinbaum has a masters degree in learning disabilities and held teaching certificates in elementary education, early childhood education, learning disabilities and behavior disorders.  She taught graduate level courses in special education at National-Lewis University and served as the Director of Clinical Training for practicum students in special education.

Dr. Scheinbaum was a consulting psychologist at Highland Park Hospital for many years.  She conducted evaluations on the adolescent and adult psychiatric units, the eating disorders unit and the substance abuse unit.  She presented numerous training programs for the nursing staff on stress management and delivered Grand Rounds presentations to the medical staff on anxiety disorders and relaxation techniques.

Recently, Dr. Scheinbaum engaged in additional training in nutritional approaches to mental health and the prevention and treatment of chronic medical conditions.   She studied with Dr. Andrew Weil at the Center for Integrative Medicine, with a specialization in Nutrition and Cancer.  She recently became certified as a FirstLine Therapy health care provider through Metagenics. She also completed a teacher training program in yoga at the Chicago Yoga Center and is certified through Yoga Alliance.  Married for 37 years, she has two daughters, ages 25 and 21.
